The illegal download site Torrent9, whose specialty is to offer links to exchange files via the BitTorrent protocol, has just changed its web address.
The least we can say is that the managers of the site Torrent9 are on the move: the main address of the site BitTorrent links, that is to say, used to greet Internet users eager to recover movies and television series ignoring copyright is indeed changed at regular intervals, without any particular explanation being given.
The last change has just taken place mid-February. Without warning, a redirect was set up for hackers to access the site via a very unusual domain extension: ".red". Managed by the Irish register Afilias, it exists especially for those who like ... the color red (which, considering the general design of Torrent9, is obviously not the first reason).
It should be noted that ".red" can also be used as a variant, in Spanish, for ".net" because this word means "network" ("red de computadoras" thus gives "computer network"). But the target curur of the site being French-speaking, it does not make sense either. Last possibility, a word game between the domain name and its extension, but in this case, we do not see the meaning of the combination with Torrent9.
The previous extensions used by Torrent9 (".pe", ".me" and ".bz") are still active and direct users to the new address. The last two migrations took place in 2017, in September and in December.
JUDICIAL RISK
Remember that the activities conducted by the Torrent9 team are illicit on the judicial level. By making such a site available, it is liable to heavy penalties in the event of a trial in France, potentially including prison sentences and fines of up to hundreds of thousands of euros or more. OMG-Torrent, Pirate Island or Mamietracker are examples.
It should also be noted that users who recover files via Torrent9 are not immune to a legal risk. Since these downloads are made without the consent of the rights holders, a procedure can be initiated against them. They expose themselves first of all to the Hadopi law, since this one has competence to fight the piracy of contents on these spaces, via the system of the graduated response.
In addition to measures to combat piracy in P2P, there are also legal levers to take legal action against some Internet users, usually the most active. These measures appear in the intellectual property code and could allow the cultural industry to carry out some targeted actions, for example if the convictions are harsh.
Torrent9 is in any case known rights holders: a tour in the center of transparency of information made available by Google shows, about copyright content deletions, that the different addresses used by the site have made the subject of several tens of thousands of requests for dereferencing on the American search engine.
