Australian researchers have shown that, just like women, men too can suffer from post-coital dysphoria, a feeling of sadness, crying or irritability just after sexual intercourse.

Great feeling of sadness after a relationship? Irritability? Crying? This is post-coital dysphoria (CPD), and both men and women can be a victim. This is in any case what has just shown a new study by researchers at the University of Technology Queensland (Australia). The results were published in the International Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy. While this condition was recognized in women, no studies have been conducted in humans to date.

The study analyzed the results of an anonymous international online survey of 1208 Australian, American, English, Russian, New Zealand and German men. Forty-one percent reported having CPD in their lifetime, 20% reported living through the previous four weeks, and up to 4% reported experiencing regular CPD.

BIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ORIGINS?

According to a statement, some men who have experienced post-coital dysphoria describe experiences ranging from "I do not want to be touched and I want to be left alone" to "I feel dissatisfied, annoyed and very agitated". Others also described a phase "without emotion and emptiness". According to the researchers, these results would indicate that the male sexual experience would be much more varied and complex than what is currently thought. They think that the reasons for CPD are multifactorial, potentially biological and psychological. Scientists associate postcoital dysphoria with psychological distress, sexual abuse during childhood, and sexual dysfunction.
